Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139: 23-24. (NIV)
I would like to relate something that happened to a friend of mine, I shall call him Dave. Dave was a brand new Christian when I met him but he was wandering in the desert, he was at his wits end. Dave had mega problems, mostly financial ones. Dave was an electrician and ran his own business. Prior to becoming a Christian he was up to all the usual fiddles, fiddling the books and the Vat. He knew that what he was doing was very wrong, especially now that he was a Christian. I took Dave under my wing. I took him to see the pastor of our church and we prayed for the situation.
Things just got worse. Daves wife did not help, they had two teenage sons, the three of them just used Dave, the wife would demand he went out and bought things to satisfy the boys whims, even if it meant getting hire purchase, the debt just got bigger. I would relate at this stage that for sometime people were coming to me with marriage problems, I would often ask the Lord why this was so as I was not in any way trained as a marriage counsellor but the people that came to see me seemed to go away quite happy, it was not me of course but the Lord speaking through me. Praise His wonderful name. I explained to Dave that it was his duty to take control of his family situation; he must not give in to the demands of the family, especially when one of the boys would order him to go to the shop for sweets etc. over a period of weeks Dave changed and things at home got better for him.
In my quiet time with the Lord each day I would pray for Dave, I caught up with Dave one day and we went to the church centre, we went into a room where we would not be disturbed and I prayed my heart out for Dave, as I prayed I felt led to lay hands on him and as I did so the power of God surged into Dave, Dave could not control his emotions, he just broke down and sobbed his heart out. I did not see Dave for about a week. I knew that God was working on Daves problems but as I have said before, we are often surprised at the way God acts and the direction from which prayers are answered. When I caught up with Dave he was beaming from ear to ear, I had never seen him so happy, he embraced me and shared with me the wonderful thing that the Lord had done for him. Dave had a nice big house with a fair bit of land. It was on this land that one of the big supermarkets wanted to build a new store.
Dave ended up with almost half a million pounds. Oh how we rejoiced at this wonderful answer to prayer. Dave paid off all of his debts and put things right with the Vat people. That was about seven years ago; today Dave has a very nice house with just the usual bills to pay. He is no longer an electrician as he developed colour blindness. Dave runs a taxi business that has proved to be successful. God not only got Dave out of debt but He also turned the family situation around as well. Dave and his wife are very close now. The two boys both ended up going to university and have good careers. Dave and the boys have become closer and both boys have a lot of love and respect for their father.
"Praise be to you, O LORD,
God of our father Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.
Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.
Now, our God, we give you thanks,
and praise your glorious name.
1 Chronicles 29: 10-13 (NIV)
